For decades, Saudi Arabia had one plan — pump oil, sell oil, repeat. But that plan is running out of time. Vision 2030 is Saudi Arabia's biggest bet on its own future.
What Is Vision 2030?
Launched in 2016 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), Vision 2030 is Saudi Arabia's master plan to reduce dependence on oil and build a modern, diversified economy. The goal is simple — before the world stops needing oil, Saudi Arabia needs to have something else to sell.
The Big Pillars
Vision 2030 runs on three engines. First, a vibrant society — opening up entertainment, tourism, and social freedoms that were unthinkable in the Kingdom just a decade ago. Concerts, cinemas, mixed-gender events — all now legal. Second, a thriving economy — building new industries like tourism, technology, mining, and manufacturing. Third, an ambitious nation — reducing government spending on subsidies and making the private sector the driver of growth.
NEOM: The City of the Future
The most ambitious project under Vision 2030 is NEOM — a $500 billion futuristic mega-city being built from scratch in the desert. The centerpiece is THE LINE — a 170 km long linear city with no cars, no roads, and no carbon emissions. Critics call it science fiction. MBS calls it the future.
Has It Worked?
Results are mixed. Tourism has exploded — Saudi Arabia welcomed over 100 million visitors in 2023. Entertainment and sports investments have been massive — LIV Golf, WWE, Formula 1, and top football players like Ronaldo and Neymar all came to Saudi Arabia. Foreign investment is rising. But oil still contributes heavily to government revenue. True diversification is still a work in progress.
The Geopolitical Angle
Vision 2030 is not just economics — it is geopolitics. Saudi Arabia is repositioning itself as a global power broker. Normalizing relations with Israel, engaging with China, balancing against Iran — MBS is using Vision 2030 as leverage to make Saudi Arabia indispensable to everyone, not just oil buyers.
What Comes Next
2030 is just 5 years away. The pressure is on. If Vision 2030 succeeds, Saudi Arabia becomes a model for petro-states worldwide. If it fails, the Kingdom faces an economic crisis unlike anything in its history. Either way, the world will be watching.
